International Day of Light 16 May

Today, on the 16th May, we celebrate the International Day of Light, a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.

Why 16th May? On the 16th May 1960, the first laser, developed by Theodore Maiman, was successfully operated. Fifty-nine years after Maiman’s ruby laser, lasers have become an integral part of modern technology and can be found almost everywhere in the twenty-first century world; improving health-care or enabling communications are only a few examples.

At Monocrom, we all are part of this new era of light-based technologies and we have a huge responsability in finding the right answers: how this technology can support social, economic and environmental well-being and protect the planet for future generations.
Happy International Day of Light!
